Low Back Pain – a life sentence?

At The North Wales Spine Clinic we constantly review the quality of what we do.  When it comes to low back pain we have huge amounts of experience.  When treating our patients who mainly come from Llandudno and Conwy for low back pain we apply what works for the person in front of us. We have learnt not to apply a one-size fits all approach and in fact we use numerous types of therapy with patients as they pass through the stages of healing.

Our aim:  long term, fast results!

Low back pain is one of the most common and costly musculoskeletal problems in modern society.  Seventy to 85% of the population will experience low back pain at some time in their lives. Proponents of massage therapy claim it can minimize pain and disability, and speed return to normal function. Does the research support the claims of its effectiveness to treat low back pain?

In the recent Cochrane Review, Massage was defined as soft-tissue manipulation using hands or a mechanical device on any body part. Non-specific low back pain indicates that no specific cause is detectable, such as infection, neoplasm, metastasis, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, fracture, inflammatory process or radicular syndrome (pain, tingling or numbness spreading down the leg).

The review summarised, ‘massage might be beneficial for patients with subacute (lasting four to 12 weeks) and chronic (lasting longer than 12 weeks) non-specific low back pain, especially when combined with exercises and education.’  So we see that massage alone may not be effective but combined with other interventions for low back pain we may see benefits.  Consider that in relation to the treatment of low back pain according to the recent and very large Cochrane Review. This review looked at 39 trials and found that spinal manipulation was more effective in reducing pain and improving the ability to perform everyday activities than sham (fake) therapy and therapies already known to be unhelpful. Thus it would suggest that combining exercises, education, spinal manipulation and sports massage proposes a highly beneficial form of treatment for low back pain.
